Distinguished and Famous people from Port Macdonnell

📖 Adam Lindsay Gordon

Poet and horseman Adam Lindsay Gordon lived at Dingley Dell near Port MacDonnell from 1864 to 1867. Those years coincided with increasing publication of his work, including the first appearance of a poem outside a newspaper or magazine. His preserved cottage gives the literary association a tangible setting among the surrounding bush. Gordon’s verse drew on an energetic life that included horses and colonial experience, but the cottage also records a period of domestic life and developing publication. Its survival allows a small place on the Limestone Coast to retain a substantial connection with nineteenth-century Australian literature.
